Mangio cena con mi mama Italiana! I eat dinner with my Italian mother. And that is after only two days of Italian lessons. As much as Spanish and French drove me nuts for seven years of my life (six of Spanish and one of French) I owe that sentence to them! Honestly I would be so lost, especially with out Spanish. Grammar and making sentences makes so much sense due to the knowledge of the other two romance languages.
But more importantly, I am at my Italian home stay and my mother is a amazing cook.
Her name is Carmen and she is a single lady with a cat named Prisca. I have tons of closet space and the room Christian and I share is bigger than a double single at school. It is the cutest little apartment up three flights of stairs (so we get out work out along with our twenty minute walk to school and the four flights of stairs to get to our classroom...)
First off, one of the most important things I've learned about Italian food is that it is meant to be enjoyed. Nothing is fake, and it comes in large portions and it is meant to be eaten slowly and enjoyed with wine and good company. And dinner is the biggest meal of the day. Basically it makes me think I've died and gone to heaven because it just gets better and better and the COURSES go on.
Tonight our first course consisted of a Spinach and ricotta cheese stuff ravioli in drizzled with olive oil served in this beautiful royal blue and gold china. Yes. I felt like a princess. Second course consisted of shredded carrots sprinkled, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, bread, and then shishkabobs of grapes and fresh Parmesan cheese. Topped off with a red wine to drink. Mind blown right? all that food, it can't get better than that!
Oh but it can. Next came dessert. We had little tiny chocolates filled with cream and fresh fruits. They were so simple and delicate and delicious.
And that was my dinner. I wish I could have taken pictures of it all but you'll just have to trust me in how amazing it was.
